The Indian government has cleared the way
for a national information database.

The Indian government has okayed a multimedia information warehouse to bring about better co-ordination between government departments. This is part of the Centre's move to ensure better "electronic governance''.

earlier also got clearance for the Vijaywada Municipal Corporation to put its records online. This is also the first move in making the Andhra Pradesh government have better governance down to the village level.

The computers that are to manage the huge database of the Andhra Pradesh government will be based on the Param supercomputer built by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Pune. The Rs 48 million project is to be finished in two years.

Other states intending to opt for such a move are to be directed to the Andhra Pradesh Technology Services, which will provide assistance. For a fee.

For now, though, the plan is restricted to Andhra Pradesh since it already has a state wide area network in place. And as the network gets denser, the systems are to be implemented at the division and mandal levels too.

Both C-DAC's and the department of electronics will be involved in the project only in the first phase of implementation at the state and district level.

Such a database, besides being used to just access information, can, on suitable software, even model situations and forecast possible outcomes.

Average citizens would only be allowed access their own records through a secure password through an Indian-language search engine.

C-DAC later hopes to link the Andhra Pradesh Information Warehouse with its unit at Pune to enable the creation of a national information warehouse, that, if and when they come up, will be linked to the data warehouses of other states.
