Smart Modular sinks Rs 10 m in Bangalore design centreSmart Modular Technologies, based in California, will invest Rs 10 million in a design centre in Bangalore. This will be the first such outside of the US.Smart Modular designs and supplies embedded computer systems for a range of electronic appliances from washing machines and microwave ovens to missiles.
The systems are supplied to original equipment manufacturers and each embedded system is product and company-specific, claims M Gopal Krishnan, director, Smart Modular Technologies India. Smart's customers include IBM, Intel, Compaq, HP, Cisco, Samsung, NCR Corporation, Mitsubishi, Gateway, Fujitsu, Siemens-Nixdorf and Data General. The embedded computer systems market is worth "billions of dollars,'' said Jeff Miller, vice-president (engineering), Smart Modular Technologies. Many appliance manufacturers produce their own embedded systems, but Miller assures that the trend is shifting towards outsourcing. Miller says "Embedded design activity is assuming increasing significance globally as more consumer electronics and related devices include embedded chips programmed for particular tasks and functions. Given the immense market size, the demand for design activity is manifold." - Compiled from the Indian media |
