SGI to invest another $15 million in IndiaSilicon Graphics Systems India Limited has announced the appointment of Prasad Medury as managing director.Medury succeeds Ashok Desai who is now promoted to director-enterprise solutions for Asia-Pacific. Medury was previously director-finance for Silicon Graphics. Desai will go back as director, enterprise solutions, to Asia-Pacific headquarter of Silicon Graphics Corporation in Singapore.
The company has so far invested $55 million in its Indian operations. "The equity pumped into the Indian venture is the highest we have invested in any of our subsidiaries worldwide. India has shown great potential in the past and we are absolutely committed to enhance our presence by becoming a key resource for our channel partners as well as customers,'' said Jansen Ek, vice-president, Asia-Pacific operations, while introducing Medury. The company is also considering investing an unspecified amount in setting up another customised software development facility for the benefit of its partners like Tata Elxsi and EDS, according to Medury. To tap non-traditional markets, the company is considering setting up an ISP demo centre to leverage the business expected from this segment, Medury said. The company offers visual computing and supercomputing solutions in six areas of manufacturing, science (including education and research), entertainment, energy and commercial market that includes ISPs, media, telecom and financial markets. Silicon Graphics also announced the company's newly formed Asia-South business grouping. Steven Szcto, who will be based at Singapore, will head the South Asia region. According to Medury, the company had partially recovered from the impact of US sanctions that had caused loss of revenue to the tune of about 25 to 30 per cent in its last fiscal ending June. Launch of new products will see SGI achieve between 35 per cent to 40 per cent growth this year and 45 per cent next year, he added. It would unveil an Intel microprocessor based server around September or October. Besides, the response to the launch of NT based workstations three months ago had been tremendous, Medury said.
