Parliament passes Telecom Regulatory Authority Bill

The Parliament has approved the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Bill, 1997, which seeks to set up an organisation for overseeing privatisation projects in the telecom sector.

The Rajya Sabha, or the upper house, passed the bill on Thursday, March 20.

Replying to the discussion in the house, Communications Minister Beni Prasad Verma said the authority should have been set up a few years ago when privatisation in the sector began all the needless controversies and scandals.

With the setting up of this authority the endeavour of the department would be to provide world-class service to customers, he said.
