All ports to have EDI by 1998The union government is to provide electronic data interchange facilities in all major ports of the country by January 1998, Minister for Surface Transport T G Venkataraman has announced."The government is committed to implement EDI facilities in the major ports, customs department offices, banks and other players of trade, by next January," Venkataraman said at 'Logistics 97', an international conference and exhibition on logistics management held recently in Madras.
The central government has also embarked on a programme to upgrade existing navigational aids at ports and provide more modern facilities such as the 'vessel traffic management system'. Sophisticated VTMS systems have already been commissioned at Bombay and Jawaharlal Nehru Port, besides a simpler system at the Calcutta Port, he said. The government is also planning to provide a 'comprehensive and coordinated' VTMS in the Gulf of Kutch, covering the major port of Kandla and minor ports and naval establishments in the area, the minister added. |
