TRAI to circulate working paper on tariff next month

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is coming out with a working paper on telecom tariff within a month to frame the tariff regulations, TRAI Chairman Justice S S Sodhi has said.

He told reporters in Bangalore that the working paper would be circulated to the Department of Telecommunications and service providers in the private sector to elicit their views before finalising the policy.

He said the TRAI would also take up disputes over tariff fixed for cellular services if the issue came up before it.

He said the DoT, despite a reminder, was yet to respond to its phasing out collection of licence fee from private operators till they receive the clearance for the frequency allotted to them.

The DoT is, at present, insisting that the licence fee be paid immediately after the operator is cleared to operate from a region.

If there is undue delay in spectrum clearance the operator would be affected by the present mode. Justice Sodhi said it is for the DoT to interact with service providers to regulate the payment of licence fee and advise TRAI. The TRAI's communication to the DoT in this regard was sent three months ago, he added.
