India colts cruised to a 270-run victory over Scotland in their opening match of the Under-19 World Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on Monday.

Set to score an impossible target of 426 in their 50 overs, Scotland played out their quota of 50 overs, scoring just 155 runs losing 8 wickets.

Scotland, who lost the wicket of opener Ian Young in the first over bowled by fast bowler Gaurav Dhiman without scoring, never looked in the chase as they kept losing wickets regularly.

The batsmen seemed keen on playing out the overs and the contest turned out to be a dull one for the sparse crowd at the stadium.

Captain Kyle Coetzer, though provided some bright moments for the minnows, as he impressed everyone with his stroke play scoring an aggressive 62, with four boundaries and three sixes.

Leg-spinner Abhishek Sharma picked two wickets for 31 runs in his 10 overs. There were three run-outs in the Scotland innings as the Indian colts put on a sharp fielding display.

Earlier, the Indian under-19 team started their World Cup campaign in style, registering a record score of 425 for 3 after being asked to bat.

It is the second highest ever score recorded in the Youth World Cup. Defending champions Australia had scored 480 for 6 against Kenya in the previous World Cup in 2001-02 in New Zealand.

Left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan led the Indian batting with a brilliant unbeaten 155 scored off just 138 balls, with 15 boundaries and a six. This was the highest individual score for India in the Youth World Cup.

He was named the man of the match for his batting effort.

The other opener Robin Uthappa was unlucky to miss out on his century falling for 97. The opening pair added 175 runs for the first wicket from just 24.1 overs.

Skipper Ambati Rayudu scored a quick fire 53 as India looked well set to reach the 350-run mark.

But left-handed Suresh Raina's blitzkrieg suddenly took the Indian aggression to another level.

The left-hander played an unbelievable knock of 90 runs off just 38 balls. His extraordinary effort contained 14 boundaries and 2 sixes.

For Scotland, Moneeb Iqbal, Ian Young and Kyle Coetzer picked a wicket each, but like the other bowlers conceded a lot of runs.

The target was reduced from 426 for 3 at the innings break after umpires ruled a short run in the Indian innings.

Brief Scores:

India Under-19: 425 for 3 in 50 overs (S Dhawan 155*, R Uthappa 97, S Raina 90, A Rayudu 53).

Scotland Under-19: 155 for 8 in 50 overs (K Coetzer 62, M Iqbal 30, A Sharma 2-31).
