March 02, 2004 16:30 IST
Opening batsman Michael Papps was rewarded for his unbeaten 92 in the sixth and final one-day international against South Africa on Tuesday with a place in the New Zealand Test team.
Papps and one-day wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum were named in the squad for the first Test starting in Hamilton on March 10 shortly after New Zealand had clinched the one-day series 5-1.
"Michael Papps has carried on his strong domestic form and, while he is still adjusting to the international arena, has shown the mental toughness needed from an opening batsman," said selector-coach John Bracewell.
With strike bowlers Shane Bond and Ian Butler both injured, Chris Martin has won a recall to the team. Middle-order batsman Nathan Astle was not considered because of a knee injury.
New Zealand: Stephen Fleming (captain), Chris Cairns, Michael Mason, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Jacob Oram, Michael Papps, Mark Richardson, Scott Styris, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, Paul Wiseman.
