Hirwani, Golwarkar rescue MP
March 18, 2004 18:41 IST
Leg spinners Narendra Hirwani and Yogesh Golwarkar bowled Madhya Pradesh back into the match in their Ranji Trophy Plate division semi-final against Orissa as the encounter was finely balanced at the end of fourth day's play at the Barabati Stadium at Cuttack on Wednesday.
Hirwani and Golwarkar grabbed four wickets each conceding 79 and 102 runs respectively as Orissa, after gaining a first innings lead of 60 runs, were bowled out for 253 in their second innings.
This left the visitors with the task of making 314 in four sessions to win the tie. At stumps, MP were 84 for the loss of two wickets requiring another 230 runs on the last day of the match on Thursday with eight wickets standing.
Resuming at the overnight score of 110 for three, the hosts lost first innings centurion Pravanjan Mallick cheaply when he became Hirwani's first victim of the match edging a catch to wicket keeper Naman Ojha after making 18 (two fours, one six).
Skipper Raul, who was batting on 16 overnight, then played the sheet-anchor as no other batsman could contribute handsomely. Raul batted for 369 minutes while making 87 (ten fours, one six) and was the ninth batsman to be dismissed.
MP's chase began tamely when opener Mudassar Pasha was caught behind by Sukhwinder Singh off speedster Debasish Mohanty for 14. But Ojha, who batted well in the first innings, and Sachin Dholpure (33) added 68 runs for the second wicket before the latter was bowled by off-spinner Sanjay Satpathy.
Ojha (batting 36, four fours, one six) and night-watchman Harbinder Sodhi, yet to open his account, were at the crease when play ended.
