Lillee still the best: Warne

October 14, 2004 16:50 IST

The accolades for Shane Warne may have already started pouring in with the ace spinner on the verge of becoming the most successful bowler in the world but the Aussie himself thinks it is Dennis Lillee who stands unchallenged as the greatest Australian bowler of all time.

Warne, just two short of overtaking the world record, said he is now thinking less about the milestone than about the knowledge that pace great Lillee trails him by 176 wickets.

Warne believes the 79 wickets Lillee took in 14 World Series Tests in the 1970s should count in his Test total.

"It still feels weird. Dennis to me will always be the best ever Australian bowler. In the 1980s as a kid growing up Dennis Lillee was the man," Warne was quoted as saying in  the Daily Telegraph.

"The World Series Cricket Tests were the best ever played and they should count. Some of the bowlers who were bowling and the wickets they were playing on... they should all count," he said.
