Plan to make Gavaskar the India manager

Sunil Gavaskar as the manager of Team India? At this stage, it seems to be nothing more than speculation, but then it's not impossible either. Gavaskar has donned the mantle once, albeit under a bit of compulsion. He stood in as manager for two matches in a tournament in Sharjah after regular manager Ajit Wadekar fell ill. Now, it seems, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, after much deliberation, wants him to take up the responsibility once again. The BCCI thinks the Little Master is best suited to lift the team from its present morass because of his rapport with senior and junior cricketers alike. "He [Gavaskar] inspires confidence," a BCCI official said. "His presence alone can inject a new confidence and vigour in the team." Gavaskar has not refused, simply because he has not been made an official offer yet. But some influential BCCI officials have dropped hints of the offer to the former Test captain, and he has not ruled it out. The BCCI is still discussing what terms could be offered to Gavaskar and for what period. Senior members of the Indian side are also agreeable to having Gavaskar as their manager. But if Gavaskar does take up the assignment, he can hardly be expected to discharge only the regular duties of a manager. How well that will be received by coach John Wright will be interesting to watch.
