About the ground :
The Orange city of Nagpur is the birthplace of India's first Test captain C K Nayudu and there is a road named after him just outside the Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium. The first Test was held as early as 1969 with New Zealand trouncing India by 167 runs.
After its inaugural Test, Nagpur had to wait 14 years to host another, this time against the Pakistanis. Drama surrounded the start of the match as Sandeep Patil, a late selection to the eleven, was stranded in Bombay and had to be ferried by a specially chartered government plane.
Although he landed only late in the afternoon, rain had fortunately lopped off most of the playing time. Maninder Singh and Shivlal Yadav spun out Sri Lanka to an innings defeat in 1986-87 but the wicket has since turned flat as a billiard table.
Tragedy enveloped the ground on November 26, 1995, when nine spectators were killed and 70 others injured after a stand collapsed during a one-dayer between India and New Zealand, a game in which saw the visitors knock up 348 runs in a pugnacious batting display that culminated in a 99-run victory.
