Green Park, Kanpur
Match: First Test, Nov 20-24, 2004
About the ground:
A big ground in the heart of the city of Kanpur, Green Park (Modi stadium) was in the very early days of pre and post-mutiny (1857) used as a parade ground. After normalisation, some Britishers formed a sports club and used the ground for cricket, football, hockey and other games.
The picturesque ground is a regular Test venue, but staging of international matches has been restricted of late because of the rotation system adopted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The first Test to be played at Green Park was in 1951-52, when England beat India by eight wickets in three days. A total of 18 Tests have been played there since, with as many as 11 ending in dull draw thanks to dead pitches.
Green Park has, however, seen some remarkable performances. It was at the venue that Jasu Patel single-handedly won a Test for India against Australia in 1959-60 by picking 14 wickets in the match, including 9-69 in first innings.
Gundappa Viswanath made his Test debut a memorable one by hitting a hundred against Australia at the venue in 1969 after getting a duck in first innings while Mohammad Azharuddin completed his world record run of scoring three consecutive centuries in his first three Tests.
