Crucial VAT meeting begins

April 08, 2003 12:06 IST

The crucial meeting of Empowered Committee on value added tax for setting a fresh deadline for the new tax regime began in New Delhi on Tuesday amid a mass rally by the traders opposing its introduction before April 2004.

The committee comprising state finance ministers, headed by Asim Dasgupta of West Bengal, will also take up the grey areas of VAT while arriving at a new date for implementing the nationwide tax system.

States failed to implement VAT from this month as only 7-8 states were ready with the legislations even as others deferred it due to political and other administrative reasons.

The traders had also gone on a two-day bandh from March 31 to protest the new tax regime.
