Transporters to halt essential supplies in Gujarat
April 19, 2003 16:11 IST
The striking truck owners in Gujarat have threatened to stop supply of essential commodities to the state following diktats of its apex body, even as the transporters' nationwide strike showed signs of intensifying on its sixth day, transport association sources said.
"All India Motor Transport Congress has already communicated to us that we should halt the supply of milk, vegetables, fruits and other commodities to intensify the stir," Vice President of Ahmedabad Motor Transport Association Ashok Jain said.
He said: "The trucks supplying essential commodities will be stopped at entry points into the city by tomorrow (Sunday) morning."
However, he hastily added that the association has 'requested' the apex body and conveyed to them that 'the transporters of Gujarat are not in favour of causing inconvenience to the common man.'
"We have requested them, but in the end we have to follow what they direct," Jain quipped.
AMTA president Chandrashekhar Joshi said: "Hollow assurances like forming a committee, given by the Centre cannot be heeded to and the strike will be intensified."
Gujarat Food and Civil Supplies Minister Kaushik Patel said: "The stock of petrol can last at least four days, while that of diesel can last a week and cooking gas cylinders will not exhaust before 15 days."
The state government has also drawn a contingency plan to counter any situation arising out of the stir.
