TDSAT verdict will end uncertainties: Reliance

August 08, 2003 16:48 IST

Reliance Infocomm, the largest wireless in local loop mobile service provider in the country, on Friday said the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal's verdict of upholding the government's WLL policy would end the uncertainties among the consumers.

"The consumers were not forthcoming...it was psychological. The verdict will end the uncertainties," Manoj Modi, executive director, Reliance Infocomm, told PTI from Mumbai.

"I hope it (the WLL controversy) should now settle down and there are no more litigations. The industry should get together and work towards consumer benefits instead of protecting their own turf," he said.

Welcoming TDSAT's majority judgement, Modi said that even the Supreme Court had earlier upheld the policy but had only raised the issue of level playing field.

Asked about the proposed concession by TDSAT for cellular operators, Modi said, "We are examining the order."

Reliance Infocomm, which launched its commercial operations in May this year, is leading the basic telecom subscribers' tally with over three million users.

Modi said today's judgement would also go a long way in achieving the targeted teledensity of 15 per cent by the end of the Tenth Five Year Plan.
