Global communications major Motorola said on Wednesday that it has bagged a $43 million contract from basic operator Tata Teleservices for deployment of Code Division Multiple Access network in Maharashtra, Mumbai and Goa.

The deployment is scheduled to be completed by May 2003, a Motorola statement said.

"Tata Teleservices is enhancing its basic telecom services portfolio by providing wireless limited mobility to its customers. We are already well entrenched in South India and recently launched CDMA based services in Delhi," S Ramakrishnan, managing director of Tata Teleservices said in the statement in New Delhi.

Stating that the company was now focusing on strengthening its operations in Western India to establish presence in CDMA-based wireless local loop services, Ramakrishnan said "We opted for Motorola as the company has expertise and significant presence in Asia Pacific in CDMA network deployment."

The statement said that the "CDMA 1X" network is designed to provide customers data services at speed of up to 144 kbps in addition to regular voice services.
