MTNL makes incoming calls free on mobile service

February 27, 2003 16:44 IST

Telecom giant Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd said on Thursday it would levy no incoming call charge on its cellular service, matching a move made last week by the fast-growing sector's biggest player, BSNL.

"All incoming calls (for MTNL cellular services) from all services (are) to be made free for consumers with effect from March 1," MTNL said in statement.

The move comes amid a fierce tariff war between cellular companies and fixed-line phone firms which are offering a cheaper limited radius facility in India's telecom sector, one of the fastest growing markets globally.

The New York Stock Exchange listed MTNL provides cellular, fixed-line, limited mobility services and Internet access in India's two big telecom markets, New Delhi and Mumbai.

Last week, state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, India's largest telecom company by sales, made incoming calls free from all networks on two of its most popular cellular schemes.
