Reliance Infocomm's subscriber base in the limited mobility segment has touched 20 lakh mark within just five months after it opened bookings in February this year. The company commercially launched the service on May 1.
"We have touched the 20 lakh mark on June 30. The subscriber base has swelled during the last four weeks with several new schemes offered to customers. Even the budget schemes, which restrict the monthly spend of the customer, has helped," a senior Reliance Infocomm executive said. A company spokesperson declined to comment.
Reliance Infocomm's subscriber base earlier shot from 8.61 lakh as on March 25 to 15 lakh last month.
In a letter, dated June 16, to the shareholders, Mukesh D Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, said "Within a very short period, Reliance Infocomm has acquired 15 lakh customers for the Reliance IndiaMobile services."
In comparison, Tata Teleservices, the only other operator in the limited mobility segment (in Andhra Pradesh and New Delhi) has acquired around 3.2 lakh customers.
At the soft launch on December 28, last year, Ambani had said the company aimed to add 10 lakh subscribers every month.
The company appears to be way behind its original target. Industry sources claim that Reliance is putting its act together prior to the launch of mobility services by Tata Teleservices, which is planning to unveil its wireless mobility services in six circles across the country.
This month it expects to launch in other cities in Maharashtra such as Aurangabad, Nagpur, Nasik and Pune, and will make an entry in the Mumbai circle by early August.
