Inflation falls to 4.97%

Inflation fell by another 0.08 per cent to reach 4.97 per cent for the week ended June 14 despite an across-the board rise in prices.

According to the provisional data released by the government, the annual point-to-point inflation based on the wholesale price index, with 1993-94 prices as the base, fell to 4.97 per cent, compared to 5.05 per cent in the previous week and 2.48 per cent in the corresponding period last year.

The WPI, however, rose 0.3 per cent to 173.2 during the week ended June 14, compared to 165 in the corresponding period last year.

The final WPI for the week ended April 14 stood at 172.9 compared to the provisional level of 172.3 with inflation rate revised to 6.53 per cent against the provisional mark of 6.16 per cent.

During the week-ended June 14, the index for the primary articles' group shot up 1.2 per cent to 183.2 points, compared to 172.4 in the corresponding period last year, because of a sharp increase in prices of food products.

The index for the fuel, power, light and lubricants' group rose to 246.1 points due to a 2 per cent increase in naphtha prices.

The index for the manufactured products' group, which accounts for over 60 per cent of the index, rose 0.1 per cent to 153.4, compared to 147 in the corresponding period last year.

Prices rose for raw skins (4 per cent), fodder and sunflower (3 per cent each), raw hides (2 per cent) and cotton seed and castor seed (1 per cent each).
