Indian commercial vehicles manufacturer Ashok Leyland has received a $46 million order from war-torn Iraq for supplying 3322 trucks under the UN-approved Oil-for-Food programme, a top executive of the company said on Friday.
"This order was expected to significantly boost the company's prospects in the export market", R Seshasayee, managing director of the company, told reporters in Chennai.
He said the delivery schedule would be finalised after the UN placed the order on its priority list and deliveries could commence only after the Iraqi ports became fully operational and other logistic issues are sorted out.
Meanwhile, the company had received repeat orders from Afghanistan and Seychelles, the two export markets the company entered into last year, he said.
He said exports grew by 17.5 per cent in the 2002-03 fiscal as against the seven per cent export growth registered by Indian commercial vehicles industry.
The company exported 2550 vehicles in the last fiscal, as against 2170 vehicles in the previous fiscal.
