Sensex drops 67 points at close

The Wall Street rally on Monday saw the Sensex open with a positive gap of 17 points at 4,866, and zoomed past the 4,900-mark in early morning deals. The index, however, could not hold the gains and soon slipped into the negative zone.
Selective buying saw the index move in a narrow range till late noon deals. A rally in pharma scrips saw the index log gains in afternoon trades - only to give it all back towards the closing bell on sustained selling in heavyweights like ITC, Reliance and SBI. The Sensex finally closed on a weak note at 4,782 - a drop of 67 points.
While 20 index scrips slipped, nine moved up and one was flat on Tuesday. The traded volume and value were higher at 3.75 crore (37.5 million) and Rs 1,362 crore (Rs 13.62 billion), respectively. Decliners, however, accounted for 3.19 crore (31.9 million) shares for Rs 1,161 crore (Rs 11.61 billion) - a clear sign of profit-taking today.
ITC tanked 3% (Rs 27) to Rs 880. Reliance also lost 3% (Rs 14) to Rs 467. HLL slipped towards the close, and declined Rs 2 to Rs 187.
SBI lost nearly 4% (Rs 19) to Rs 474. HPCL was down 4% (Rs 13) at Rs 341. BHEL and MTNL were marginally lower today.
Infosys was down Rs 34 at Rs 4,714. Satyam also slipped, but HCL Tech added Rs 8 to Rs 202.
Grasim was firm right through the session, but slipped towards the close and was finally down a rupee at Rs 716. Gujarat Ambjua dropped 4% (Rs 11) to Rs 234. ACC and L&T also finished on a weak note.
Tata Motors declined nearly 5% (Rs 19) to Rs 367. Bajaj was up Rs 6 at Rs 848, and Hero Honda ws up Rs 2 at Rs 335.
Dr. Reddy's zoomed nearly 9% (Rs 103) to Rs 1,271. Cipla advanced more than 4% (Rs 46) to Rs 1,090. Ranbaxy was up Rs 3 at Rs 1,029. Glaxo, however, was down 2.5% (Rs 12) at Rs 456.
BSES declined 4% (Rs 19) to Rs 412. Tisco was also down 4% (Rs 15) at Rs 326.
Tech scrips largely finished on a weak note. Wipro plunged 3% (Rs 41) to Rs 1,330. Mastek plummeted 12% (Rs 31) to Rs 231 after the poor Q1 numbers released on Monday. NIIT, Hexaware, Visualsoft also declined. Mphasis BFL, Digital and Sonata, however, finished with gains.
Oil PSUs, too, slipped today. BPCL lost nearly 5% (Rs 17) to Rs 344. ONGC declined 3% (Rs 21) to Rs 620. IOC was down 2% at Rs 369.
