Core sector grows 5.9% in Sept

The infrastructure sector witnessed a year-on-year growth of 5.9 per cent in September when compared with 2.2 per cent in the year-ago period, according to data released by the government on Wednesday.
The core sector growth, however, declined to 4.2 per cent in the first-half of the current fiscal from 6.5 per cent in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.
Refineries led the growth in September with an increase of 11 per cent followed by the steel sector with an increase of 7.8 per cent and cement with an increase of 7.2 per cent.
Electricity (5 per cent), coal (4.9 per cent) and crude oil (0.3 per cent) also logged increases in the period under review, the release said.
The steel sector logged the maximum growth of 11.2 per cent in the first six months of the current fiscal (April-September) followed by cement (9.8 per cent) and coal (5.8 per cent). Crude oil production declined 1.4 per cent in H1FY04 as against an increase of 5.3 per cent in the corresponding period of the last fiscal, the release added.
