Sensex sheds 112 points on selling pressure

Unabated selling pressure across the board saw the Sensex finish with a huge loss of 112 points at 4,194. The Nifty dropped 43 points to close at 1,329.

Heavyweights, PSUs and tech stocks were battered today.

ITC at Rs 791 (down Rs 13 or 2 per cent) and Reliance at Rs 403 (down Rs 14 or 3 per cent) contributed to the weakness of the Sensex.

More than 58 lakh Reliance shares changed on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 239 crore. HLL also ended on a subdued note with a rupee loss at Rs 184.

HPCL (down 8 per cent or Rs 34 to Rs 390), SBI (down Rs 18 or 4 per cent to Rs 424), MTNL (down 4 per cent or Rs 6 to Rs 118) and BHEL (down a per cent or Rs 5 to Rs 349) reeled under sustained selling pressure and ended with steep losses.

While HPCL registered volumes of more than 19 lakh on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 80 crore, SBI accounted for volumes of more than 15 lakh on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 68 crore.

HCL Tech emerged as a major loser today, and slumped 18 per cent (Rs 35) to Rs 161. Infosys, after a mixed outing in the morning trades, slipped deeper into the red thereafter and lost 3 per cent (Rs 123) to close at Rs 4,027.

More than three lakh shares were traded on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 136 crore. Satyam, too, traded on a lacklustre note and declined 3 per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 229.

Pharma, cement and auto stocks, too, came under relentless selling pressure and ended at lower levels.

Sensex @ 1500 hrs

The market has witnessed further correction following renewed selling pressure in PSUs, techs, pharma and cement stocks. Though heavyweights and auto stocks are trading with steady losses, the overall mood in the markets remains grim, with the index shedding further ground.

The Sensex has plummeted 89 points to 4,217. The Nifty, too, has stretched its losses by 37 points to 1335.

HPCL has witnessed further selling in its counter, and has dropped 5% (Rs 24) to Rs 400. While MTNL has slumped 3% to Rs 120, SBI has added further losses to 434 - down Rs 8 or 2%. BHEL is still trading on a subdued note with a loss of Rs 3 at Rs 351.

ITC is trading with a loss of a per cent (Rs 9) at Rs 795. Reliance has slightly improved from its previous losses, but is still down Rs 6 at Rs 411. HLL still remains down a rupee at Rs 184.

Infosys shed Rs 68 or 2% at Rs 4,083, HCL Tech at Rs 166 (down Rs 30 or 15%) and Satyam is down Rs 4 at Rs 233.

Grasim (down 2% or Rs 10 to Rs 606), Gujarat Ambuja (down 4% or Rs 10 to Rs 218), ACC (down 5% or Rs 11 to Rs 197) and L&T (down 2% or Rs 8 to Rs 294) continue to reel under selling pressure.

Ranbaxy gained selling momentum in the afternoon trades, and has dropped 5% (Rs 51) to Rs 972. Cipla, on renewed selling pressure, has shed 2% (Rs 23) to Rs 1,008. Dr. Reddy's continues to remain steady with a loss of Rs 5 at Rs 1,145. Glaxo is down a rupee at Rs 449.

Hero Honda (down 2% or Rs 6 to Rs 279) and Telco (down Rs 7 or 2%) are still languishing in the negative territory. Bajaj, after a brief stint in the positive zone, has slipped into the red with a loss of Rs 3 at Rs 699.

Hindalco is down a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 873. While Tisco is down a rupee at Rs 250, Zee is trading with marginal gains at Rs 104.

Sensex@1330 hrs

The market on the back of unabated selling in PSUs, heavyweights, cement and auto stocks since opening trades, continue to display negative trend. The Sensex is down 63 points at 4,242.

The Nifty has dropped 27 points to 1,345.

ITC has edged lower by a per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 797. Reliance also remained lacklustre with a loss of 2% (Rs 9) at Rs 409. HLL is still trading marginally lower at Rs 184.

HPCL at Rs 409 (down Rs 15 or 3%), BHEL at Rs 350 (down Rs 4), MTNL at Rs 120 (down Rs 3 or 2%) and SBI (down Rs 5) are still trading at subdued levels.

HCL Tech is still reeling under relentless selling pressure, and has shed 15% (Rs 30) to Rs 167. Infosys is unchanged with a loss of a per cent (Rs 22) at Rs 4,129. Satyam is trading marginally lower at Rs 235.

ACC continues to shed ground on sustained selling pressure, and is down nearly 4% (Rs 8) at Rs 200. Grasim (down Rs 9 to Rs 607) and Gujarat Ambuja (down Rs 8 or 3% to Rs 220) are still exhibiting losses.

Dr. Reddy's, after a sharp decline in the morning deals, has recouped its losses to a considerable extent, but is still down Rs 4 at Rs 1,147. Cipla is still in the negative territory with a loss of a per cent (Rs 13) at Rs 1,018. Ranbaxy has dropped 4% (Rs 39) to Rs 984. Glaxo, however, has rolled back into the positive zone with a gain of Rs 2 at Rs 452.

Hero Honda at Rs 279 (down Rs 6 or 2%) and Telco at Rs 274 (down Rs 5 or 2%) continue to figure in the losers list. Bajaj, however, is trading flat at Rs 702.

Hindalco (down Rs 12 to Rs 869), BSES (down Rs 5 to Rs 352) and Tisco (down Rs 2 to Rs 249) have remained weak since opening trades. HDFC, however, is still up Rs 2 at Rs 483.

Selective stocks continue to display positive trend. BEML bounced from a low of Rs 113, and has gained 12% (Rs 14) to Rs 128. Kotak Bank has clocked 6% gains (Rs 15) to Rs 259. IBP and SAIL are trading with gains of 2% each at Rs 764 (up Rs 12) and Rs 35, respectively. Aurobindo Pharma, CMC and Moser Baer are up a per cent each at Rs 573 (up Rs 4), Rs 456 (up Rs 4) and Rs 323 (up Rs 2), respectively.

Sensex@1140 hrs

The all-round selling in old and new economy stocks has seen the Sensex shed further ground. Though select pharma stocks have slightly come off from their lower levels; PSUs, heavyweights and cement stocks continue with their south-ward trend. The Sensex is now down 69 points at 4,237.

The Nifty, too, has slipped deeper into the red, and is now down 28 points at 1,344.

HPCL (down 4% or Rs 15 to Rs 409), BHEL (down a per cent or Rs 5 to Rs 349), SBI (down Rs 5 to Rs 436) and MTNL (down 2% to Rs 121) continue to remain weak on sustained selling pressure.

Reliance has slipped further to Rs 408 - down Rs 9 or 2%. ITC, which traded in the positive zone a short while ago, has lost Rs 4 to Rs 800. HLL is still subdued with a rupee loss at Rs 184.

HCL Tech's sluggish trend continues on relentless selling pressure, and has lost 17% (Rs 33) to Rs 164. Infosys is now down Rs 11 at Rs 4,140. Satyam is still down a rupee at Rs 235.

L&T shed 3% (Rs 8) to Rs 293. Gujarat Ambuja is languishing in the negative territory with a loss of 3% (Rs 8) at Rs 220. While Grasim has dropped 2% (Rs 13) to Rs 603, ACC has edged lower by 3% (Rs 6) to Rs 202.

Ranbaxy has slipped below the Rs 1,000-mark on further selling, and is now down 3% (Rs 29) at Rs 994. Dr. Reddy's and Cipla have pared their losses on buying support, but is sill down a per cent each at Rs 1,145 (down Rs 5) and Rs 1,017 (down Rs 14), respectively. Glaxo is down a rupee at Rs 449.

Hero Honda and Telco have declined 2% each to Rs 280 (down Rs 5) and Rs 273 (down Rs 7), respectively. Bajaj, however, has inched higher by Rs 3 to Rs 704.

BSES has shed 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 349. Tisco is down 2% (Rs 5) at Rs 246. HDFC, however, is trading in the green with a per cent gain (Rs 5) at Rs 485. Zee is still up a rupee at Rs 105.

Sensex@1040 hrs

The Sensex, which slipped into the red after a positive opening, is still exhibiting losses on sustained selling pressure in PSUs, heavyweights, pharma and cement stocks. Though select stocks have bounced back into the green, the Sensex is down 34 points at 4,272.

The Nifty has also extended its losses by 14 points to 1,358.

HPCL at Rs 415 (down Rs 9 or 2%), BHEL at Rs 348 (down Rs 6 or 2%) and SBI at Rs 438 (down Rs 3) have lost ground on selling pressure.

Reliance has lost a per cent (Rs 5) to Rs 413. HLL also is trading in the red with a rupee loss at Rs 184. ITC, however, has added Rs 2 to Rs 806.

Infosys has erased its losses from its opening trades and is now up a per cent (Rs 33) at Rs 4,184. Satyam is up a rupee at Rs 237. HCL Tech, however, has inched further lower from its sluggish start, and has lost 11% (Rs 21) to Rs 175.

Dr. Reddy's and Cipla have dropped 2% each to Rs 1,125 (down Rs 25) and Rs 1,014 (down Rs 17), respectively. While Ranbaxy, too, has shed 2% (Rs 19) to Rs 1,005, Glaxo is down Rs 2 at Rs 448.

Gujarat Ambuja is nearly down by 3% (Rs 6) at Rs 222. While L&T and ACC have slipped 2% each to Rs 295 (down Rs 6) and Rs 203 (down Rs 4), Grasim is down a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 609.

Hero Honda and Telco are trading a per cent lower each at Rs 281 (down Rs 3) and Rs 275 (down Rs 4), respectively. Bajaj, however, is up a rupee at Rs 702.

While Tisco is down a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 248, Zee is trading with a per cent gain at Rs 105.

Select stocks have garnered gains in the morning session. HCL Infosys has moved up 3% (Rs 8) to Rs 231. IBP, Aurobindo Pharma and Moser Baer are trading with 2% gain each at Rs 765 (up Rs 13), Rs 580 (up Rs 11) and Rs 327 (up Rs 6), respectively. Jindal Steel is up a per cent (Rs 10) at Rs 785.

Major losers on the BSE in the opening session - RCF has dropped 7% (Rs 3) to Rs 33. Container Corporation and IOC have shed 4% each to Rs 415 (down Rs 20) and Rs 386 (down Rs 14), respectively. ONGC has lost 3% (Rs 21) to Rs 635. Maruti, too, has dipped 3% (Rs 8) to Rs 212.
