Firms plan huge investments in Gujarat

On the second day of global investment summit in Ahmedabad, industrial groups have announced plans to make investments of Rs 12,000 crore (Rs 120 billion) in Gujarat, P K Laheri, the state's chief secretary, said on Monday.

Mining major Hindalco proposed to invest Rs 1,500 crore (Rs 15 billion) to expand its copper smelter at Dahej, Laheri said.

The Essar group would pump in Rs 3,500 crore  (Rs 35 billion) for the power project and telecom business, while detergent manufacturer Nirma would invest Rs 2,800 crore  (Rs 28 billion) into a greenfield cement plant at Bhavnagar and for expanding its soap and detergents plant at Baroda.
