 What sealed the Congress candidate's fate was the presence of Sambasiva Rao Kavuri, the Indira Congress nominee, winner in 1984 and 1989 and runner-up in 1991. Kavuri won 128,164 or 18.39 % of the vote. The NTR-TDP candidate, Bopanna Gangadhra Chowdhury, won 71, 764 votes as well. The TDP first won this seat in 1991. The BJP, which won just 4 % of the vote in 1991, boosted its share to 10.3 % this time.
