Tridib Chaudhuri won this constituency from 1952 till 1980, mostly for the RSP and a couple of as an independent. In 1984 the Congress's Atish C Sinha won this seat for the first and only time, before it reverted to the RSP. In 1996 Pramothes Mukherjee defeated none other than the Congress's Siddharth Shankar Ray -- former chief minister and India's ambassador to the US -- by 44,000 votes.
