Tibetan protesters arrested in Delhi during Li's arrival

A group of Tibetan demonstrators were detained by police while trying to disrupt the motorcade of senior Chinese leader Li Peng on his arrival in New Delhi Thursday.

Police rounded up more than a dozen flag-carrying Tibetan demonstrators shortly before Li's motorcade was to pass through the heavily-guarded route from the airport to Hotel Taj Palace where the Chinese parliamentary chairman is staying, Jt Commissioner of Police (New Delhi Range) Suresh Roy said.

Li, on a nine-day visit to India, arrived from Bombay Thursday and was expected to meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh besides a delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry during his stay in the capital.

The Tibetan Freedom Movement organised a demonstration in Delhi Wednesday in protest against Li's visit and police had made elaborate security arrangements for the routes and venues to be visited by the senior Chinese leader in the city. ''All precautions have been taken to prevent any kind of distress to the dignitary,'' the official said.
