Kirti Azad arrested in Bihar

January 14, 2003 05:03 IST

BJP MP and former cricketer Kriti Azad was on Monday arrested on the charge of ransacking the office of the Bihar State Electricity Board in Darbhanga during a demonstration against insufficient power supply in May 2001.

Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar told PTI that Azad went to the Lehriasarai police station on Monday afternoon to surrender in the case after a bailable warrant was issued against him by the court of First Class Judicial Magistrate J C Mishra in September 2001.

The BJP Lok Sabha member was arrested and taken into police custody.

"Azad should have surrendered before the court since it had issued the warrant. Since it was a bailable warrant, he could have executed a bond at the police station," Kumar said.

In the absence of formalities, which Azad should have completed by furnishing necessary documents for bail, police had to take him into custody, he added.
