President A P J Abdul Kalam's security has been upgraded with the inclusion of a jammer vehicle in his motorcade.
This followed intelligence inputs about a threat to the President's life from Pakistan-based terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.
A jammer can stop any remote-controlled improvised explosive device or a mine from exploding.
The security personnel in the pilot car and the first two escort cars in the presidential cavalcade will now be armed with sophisticated weapons like AK-47 assault rifles.
A meeting of senior officials from the Cabinet secretariat, top Intelligence Bureau officials and representatives of other security agencies reviewed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's security too.
In the wake of frequent security breaches on the prime minister's route, the sources said a personnel each from the elite Special Protection Group would be placed in the pilot jeep and both the escort car and the tail car.
Earlier, these vehicles used to carry Delhi Police sharp-shooters.
Earlier this year, a van had entered the route of the prime minister motorcade near the airport in New Delhi.
Sources said some upgradation of weaponry was also taking place for the security personnel other than the SPG personnel in the prime minister's motorcade.
