Members of the Samajwadi Party clashed with their Bahujan Samaj Party counterparts in the Lok Sabha on Monday after Mulayam Singh Yadav's son took exception to certain remarks made by a BSP member against his father forcing Speaker Manohar Joshi to adjourn the House for lunch earlier than scheduled.

Angered by BSP member Ashok Chandel's slogans against his father, Akhilesh Yadav pulled up his sleeves and moved menacingly towards him with other SP colleagues.

Former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, Congress Chief Whip P R Das Munsi, Shiv Sena leader Chandrakant Khaire and some others quickly intervened to prevent an ugly scene.

It all started when SP member Akhilesh Singh accused BSP leader Mayawati of having encouraged corruption by demanding a cut from her party MPs' constituency development funds.

Singh, whose notice for an adjournment motion on the issue was disallowed by the speaker, raised slogans against the UP chief minister.

These were countered by BSP members with Chandel targeting the SP chief.

As tempers flared, Joshi adjourned the House. However, heated exchanges continued between the members of the two parties when the House reassembled and Joshi announced the lunch recess.
