Militants aim for oil depot in Jammu;
1 killed, 7 injured
March 26, 2003 12:38 IST
Two days after the massacre of 24 Kashmiri Pandits, militants on Wednesday made an unsuccessful bid to blow up a major oil storage complex in Jammu by triggering an improvised explosive device (IED) placed in an oil tanker, official sources said.
One person was killed and seven injured in the incident, which occurred near the Jammu railway station.
Militants had planted the IED in the empty oil tanker, which had come along with another tanker from the Rajouri-Poonch region and was headed for an oil depot located 100 meters away from the railway station, the sources told PTI.
The tanker was about 100 yards away from the main gate of the depot when the IED exploded around 0805 IST killing one person on the spot and injuring seven.
The complex houses three depots -- of the Hindustan Petroleum (HP), Bharat Petroleum (BP) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), sources said.
Had the blast taken place inside the complex it would have caused a major disaster, sources said.
Security around the complex has been tightened, sources said adding an investigation has been launched into the incident.
