Pakistan has constituted a 26-member committee of parliamentarians drawn from ruling and opposition parties to mobilise world opinion in favour of its stand on Kashmir.

The committee consists of 16 members from the ruling coalition and 10 from opposition. Former foreign minister Gohar Ayub Khan, cricketer-turned-politician Imran

Khan, senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and chairman of the 15-party Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Qazi Hussain Ahmad and leader of the Islamist party alliance Muthahida Majlis Amal (MMA) Fazlur Rehman.

While the government announced the formation of the committee, it was not yet clear, whether the opposition leaders, who were boycotting Parliament to protest against the continuation of Pervez Musharraf as president have accepted their nomination to the committee.

The National Assembly approved four-point terms of references for the new committee on Monday.

The government, however, has not named the chairman of the committee.

The terms of reference include monitoring alleged Indian violations of human rights in Jammu and Kashmir, mobilisation of world opinion in support of 'right of self-determination' of Kashmiris as well as Pakistan's stand on Kashmir to solicit and provide political, moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiris.

The government did not clarify whether it was a substitute to Pakistan Kashmir Committee, which was dissolved last year.
