Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde called on Governor Mohammed Fazal today amidst indications of mounting pressure on his government to hand over the investigation into the multi-crore fake stamp paper scandal to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Shinde met Fazal soon after the latter's arrival from a visit to the national capital, where he met Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

Investigations into the scam in three states -- Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Gujarat -- have already been handed over to the CBI.

The agency is also looking at the involvement of some members of the staff at the India Security Press in Nashik in helping prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi acquire printing machines.

A reliable source told rediff.com that both Fazal and Advani favour a role for the CBI in the investigation in Maharashtra too.

Advani is already on record offering the CBI's services to the Special Investigation Team probing the scam in Maharashtra.

Shinde, who believes the SIT led by a retired Indian Police Service officer is doing a good job, was closeted with Fazal at Raj Bhavan for nearly half an hour. The chief minister, however, declined to divulge details of the meeting to waiting reporters, saying it "is an administrative matter".
