Iraq rejects Saudi troops

October 19, 2004 13:10 IST

The interim Iraqi government and the multinational command declined an offer by Saudi Arabia to send some of its troops to Iraq, a senior US official has said.

Saudi Arabia offered some troops for Iraq but the offer was declined by both the Iraqis and the multinational command, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said here yesterday.

He said that the Saudis wanted the troops to remain under Saudi command in Iraq.

"The Iraqi Government had some real concerns about having troops from a neighbouring country inside Iraq. The multinational force commanders also had some concerns about forces operating outside the chain of command structure," McCellan said.
