Two people died in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu in the past 48 hours, while a flood warning was issued Monday downstream of Vaigai river in the southern districts, which have seen moderate but incessant rains for the past three days.
Since morning, about 8,500 cusecs of water has been released from the Vaigai Dam, which is inching closer to its full reservoir level of 71-ft due to huge inflows following heavy rains in the catchment areas this week.
In Ramanathapuram district, which witnessed an unprecedented 35 cm rainfall, an aged woman died in a wall collapse.
Two people were washed away in flash floods near Kalakadu in Tirunelveli district early Monday. Police in Tirunelveli said the two men, standing at a bus stop on the banks of the gushing stream were swept away. The body of one of them had been recovered. The other is still missing.
The famed Courtralam waterfalls in the district are raging and authorities have banned bathing in the falls.
Ramanathapuram, Theni and parts of Tirunelveli districts received heavy showers while it was moderate elsewhere in the region. Tanks and ponds continue to overflow in the southern districts.
The rain has crippled normal life in the region and hampered distribution of relief to those affected in the previous spell of rain and floods.
