Typhoon Longwang struck Sunday night in China's south-eastern coast from where nearly four lakh people were relocated to safer places to minimise casualties.

The typhoon, named after the fabled dragon king, is the 19th typhoon to hit mainland China in 2005 and had earlier struck Taiwan, leaving one dead and dozens injured.

Reports from Fuzhou, Fujian's provincial capital said Longwang struck Jinjiang city in the province at 1835 IST Sunday, scaling at force 12 in the epicentre.

Longwang bringing heavy winds and torrents, is moving to Fujian's coastal city Xiamen where the airport was closed on Sunday.

The typhoon might cause serious impact in the province, the provincial meteorological bureau warned Sunday.

According to local flood prevention office, 376,000 people had been evacuated to safe places by Sunday evening.

They were moved from boats and aquiculture offshore farms in Ningde, Fuzhou, Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou.

Over 38,700 fishing boats were also brought back to harbours.
