Tamil Nadu will not permit the Kerala [Images] government to construct a dam across the Mullaperiyar dam, Chief Minister M Karunandhi said on Wednesday.

"We will not permit a new dam. We will insist that the Centre should not grant permission to Kerala to construct the dam," he told reporters.

He said the apex court had backed the Tamil Nadu government's stand on increasing the dam level to 142 feet from 136 feet. However the Kerala government was being adamant.

"With the dam level reaching 136 feet, continuous intransigence on the part of Kerala is not welcoming," he said.
PWD Minister Duraimurugan said the Kerala government had made amendments in its Irrigation and Water Resources Act and brought the dam under its control.

The Tamil Nadu government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking to nullify the amendment.

"We will decide on raising the dam level after the Supreme Court decides on it," he added.
