JCT in second place with win over Tollygunge
January 15, 2004 19:11 IST
JCT Mills, Phagwara, continued their good showing, striking once in each half to prevail 2-0 over local outfit Tollygunge Agragami in an eighth National Football League match in Kolkata on Thursday.
The Punjab side, who got the better of Mohun Bagan in their last match, scored through Jo Paul Ancheri and I M Vijayan to garner three points and climb to the second spot in the high-profile league.
After 10 outings, JCT now have 18 points, while Tollygunge remain on a dismal seven points.
Leaders Dempo Sports Club are on 20 points after nine games.
The Salt Lake stadium clash saw JCT go into the lead as early as the 13th minute. A Musa Aliu throw was headed back by Nigerian striker Stephen Abarowei and the Tollygunge defenders failed to effect a quick clearance. Ancheri, standing close by, unleashed a prompt left-footer, which went in off the hands of Tollygunge custodian Chinmoy Banerjee.
JCT, who continued to dominate and missed a number of chances, finally got the insurance goal after change of ends, in the 61st minute, when veteran Vijayan fired a rasping 30-yarder after taking a quick half-turn. Banerjee was to be blamed for the reverse as he misjudged the shot and made virtually no attempt to salvage the situation.
In between, Tollygunge carried out raids into the opponent's territory but failed to create many openings.
