Woods retains World Match Play crown

March 01, 2004 11:23 IST

World number one Tiger Woods came from a one-hole deficit to defeat Davis Love III 3 and 2 in the final of the Match Play Championship on Sunday.

Woods trailed by one hole after the first 18 holes on the La Costa Resort and Spa but squared the match on the 20th hole.

The defending champion took the lead on the 25th hole of the 36th-hole final and never trailed again.

Love, the world number five, had birdied the 16th and 17th holes in the morning to go two up, but did not win another hole.

Woods won $1.2 million for the victory, a record purse for the PGA Tour.
