BJP president's chopper makes
emergency landing
February 23, 2003 02:37 IST
Bharatiya Janata Party President M Venkaiah Naidu had a providential escape on Saturday afternoon when the helicopter he was travelling in developed a serious technical snag and had to make an emergency landing at Tuenseng in Nagaland.
Naidu, who is on a three-day campaign tour of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura on an assembly election campaign is 'safe and there is no reason to worry', party general secretary and spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.
The privately-owned chopper developed some problems minutes after it left Chizami where Defence Minister George Fernandes, who was accompanying Naidu on a joint campaign, disembarked to address a public meeting, he said.
Fernandes later left for Dimapur in an Indian Air Force Plane, Naqvi said.
"While all other scheduled meetings of Naidu for the day has been cancelled, another chopper is being sent to enable Naidu to continue with his campaign," he said.
