Hema Malini becomes MP; says she will work for BJP

October 16, 2003 21:43 IST

Actor Hema Malini, who was on Thursday sworn in as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, said she would work for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Parliament.

"Though I am not a member of the party, I would love to be associated with BJP. I am here because of them only," the 55-year-old actress, whose swearing in coincided with her birthday, said after becoming an MP.

She termed her entry into Parliament as a great honour and said, "I know people have great expectation from me and I shall try to live up to their expectations."

She also emphasised that she would continue to work for the progress of art and culture, besides carrying out her parliamentary responsibilities.

"Till now I was performing dance for different causes like children and women and Indian film industry, but now I will take up these issues at appropriate levels."

Later, at a function in the residence of BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu, she said she would campaign for the party in the coming assembly polls.

Along with the actor, three persons were sworn in -- V Narayanswamy (Congress), Kamla Manhar (Congress) and Vidya Niwas Mishra (nominated).

Dr Narayan Singh Manaklao (nominated) could not attend the ceremony.
