It was here that New Zealand crashed to their lowest Test score of 26, against England in 1955, but then recorded their first ever win a year later against the West Indies. First-class matches were held here as far back as 1914, but cricket was almost scrapped soon after when the ground was hit by floods and then suffered financial difficulties. A deal with rugby officilas saw a complete revamp of the facilities and change of fortunes. The humid sub-tropical conditions can help produce wickets that assist spin bowling.
